An Italian Wedding in Verona: Nela & Davide’s Celebration of Home

Some love stories are about finding another person.

Others are about finding, in another person, the place where you finally belong.

For Nela and Davide, their Italian wedding in Verona was never really about creating a perfect day. It was about bringing together the people who had shaped their lives, across countries, languages and generations, and celebrating the home they had found in each other.

And somewhere between the olive trees, the laughter, the Italian and German voices mixing in the air, and three of Davide’s grandmothers being there to witness it all, that is exactly what happened.

A destination wedding in Verona, in the heart of Valpolicella

They chose Serego Alighieri, a historic wine estate in the Valpolicella countryside just outside Verona.

Surrounded by vineyards, olive trees and the soft landscape of Northern Italy, the estate has been connected to the descendants of Dante Alighieri since 1353. Today its gardens, historic rooms and vineyards make it an extraordinary setting for an Italian destination wedding.

But what made it perfect for Nela and Davide was not simply how beautiful it was. It gave them a place where their worlds could meet. Nela’s family and friends travelled from Germany. Davide’s people came together in Italy. Their ceremony moved naturally between Italian and German, with translations prepared so that nobody had to stand outside the emotion of what was happening.

For one day, all the different places they call home existed in the same place.

[time capsule]

When another person becomes home

Davide has always moved through life with a certain restlessness. Travel. Experiences. New places. New ideas. In his vows, he spoke about growing up with an almost obsessive feeling that time was slipping through his hands, and about trying to fill his life as much as possible because of it. And then Nela appeared.

Their beginning wasn't necessarily the simplest one. They lived between countries and sometimes continents. Davide took his time admitting what was happening between them. Nela somehow saw beyond the words he wasn't yet ready to say.

She stayed long enough for him to understand what she had already recognised. And on their wedding day, he finally put that journey into words:

“L’amore mi ha sempre spaventato. Ho sempre avuto il terrore di fare la scelta sbagliata. Con te non ho paura.”

Love has always frightened me. I have always been terrified of making the wrong choice. With you, I am not afraid.

And then came Nela's words:

“Sei il mio punto fermo, la mia casa. Con te mi sento al sicuro.”

You are my anchor, my home. With you, I feel safe.

Two people. Two sets of vows.

The same story.

With you, I am safe.
With you, I am not afraid.

Two very different people choosing the same life

One of the things I love most about Nela and Davide is that their relationship doesn't seem to require either of them to become more like the other. Quite the opposite. During the ceremony, Davide’s sister Laura described him as unpredictability, sometimes even “genius chaos.” Nela, meanwhile, is order, solidity and precision. And then Laura said something that felt like the perfect description of them: Their secret isn't cancelling those differences out to become the same. It is allowing them to dance together. You can see it when you are around them.

Davide brings movement and spontaneity. Nela brings intention and grounding. She gives his ideas somewhere to land. He sometimes nudges her beyond the plan.

And somehow they keep arriving at the same place.

An Italian-German wedding built around the people they love

There are weddings where the details are the protagonists. This wasn't one of them. Again and again, everything came back to people. Before the wedding, Nela told me that at first they had considered making the celebration much smaller. But when they started thinking about who would actually be there, she realised she couldn't imagine the day without these people. That feeling eventually found its way into her words during the wedding itself:

“I couldn't imagine spending this day without all of you. You are such an important part of my life.”

And you could feel it everywhere.

In old friends meeting again. In families crossing borders. In enormous hugs. In the grandparents watching everything unfold. In Davide having the extraordinary gift of celebrating with all three of his grandmothers there. In the tears that appeared unexpectedly and disappeared into laughter seconds later. This was not an audience watching Nela and Davide get married. They were part of it.

A ceremony among the olive trees at Serego Alighieri

Their ceremony took place outside among the olive trees at Serego Alighieri. Davide entered with his mother. Nela arrived to meet him surrounded by the people who had travelled to Italy to witness this moment. His sister Laura officiated. Friends spoke. There was Italian and German, laughter and tears, personal vows and rings deliberately chosen because their irregular, handmade form felt more like them than something perfectly smooth and conventional. And beneath all of it ran one recurring idea: courage.

The courage to leave the familiar. To move countries. To let another person see behind the armour. To remain yourself while building a life that belongs to two people. Laura described real magic as meeting someone who makes you want to put down your shield. Looking at Nela and Davide standing there, it was difficult to imagine a better description.

A wedding that was never meant to be a performance

There was something else about this day that I loved. Nela didn't want to perform her wedding. She wanted to live it. She didn't care about filling the timeline with traditions simply because weddings are supposed to contain them. What mattered was having time with Davide and with the people they loved. And that changed the rhythm of the photographs too. After the ceremony came family photographs, congratulations, glasses raised at the aperitivo, conversations that didn't need to be interrupted, little groups forming and dissolving again. Later, as the light softened over the Valpolicella landscape, we stole Nela and Davide away for a little time alone. Not an elaborate photoshoot. Just enough space for them to look at each other again. Because that, strangely enough, had been there from the beginning too. Long before this wedding, Nela had learned to recognise what Davide felt by looking at him, even when he wasn't yet capable of saying it. And when I asked Davide what he would want to remember from his wedding if photographs didn't exist, his answer came back to exactly the same place:

looking into Nela's eyes.

Sometimes two people tell you the same love story without realising they are doing it.

Dinner, speeches and a long Italian evening

As afternoon became evening, everyone gathered around the tables for dinner. The speeches brought another wave of stories, laughter and emotion. Friends spoke about the courage it had taken to build this relationship, the lives they had created between countries and the way their differences had somehow made them a stronger team. One of Davide's closest friends described their relationship not simply as a life project, but as his home, his safe harbour, the certainty that comes before everything else.

There it was again.

Home.

The same word appearing from different people, in different conversations, in different parts of the day. And perhaps that's what happens when something is true. You don't have to force the story. It keeps revealing itself.

More than a beautiful Italian wedding in Verona

There is an obvious beauty to getting married in this part of Italy. The vineyards of Valpolicella. The olive trees. Long summer evenings. Historic estates like Serego Alighieri, where generations of stories already seem to live in the walls. But when I think about Nela and Davide's wedding, those aren't the things I remember first. I remember people. I remember their three grandmothers. I remember German and Italian becoming one language whenever somebody started crying. I remember the way their friends looked at them. I remember laughter. I remember Nela letting herself stop thinking about what needed to happen next. And I remember two sentences.

With you, I feel safe.

With you, I am not afraid.

Maybe home was never really a place.

Maybe sometimes it is simply the person beside you, surrounded by all the people who helped you find your way there.

Planning your own wedding in Verona, Italy?

If you're dreaming of an Italian wedding in Verona, a vineyard wedding in Valpolicella, or a destination wedding somewhere in Italy, I photograph weddings for couples who care less about performing for the camera and more about remembering what it actually felt like to be there.

The photographs matter, of course. But so do the voices. The stories. The people. The tiny things you didn't see happening while you were somewhere else. Because years from now, I don't only want you to remember how beautiful your wedding was.

I want to take you back to how it felt.
